Job Posting: Director, Innovation at CIFAR

by Scott Mitchell on December 10, 2017

CIFAR’s core purpose is to create knowledge that enriches human life and leads to a better future for Canada and the world. Since 1982, CIFAR has been connecting the world’s best minds through interdisciplinary research programs to tackle difficult and important questions of global significance. By helping innovative pioneers push further, and inspiring young research leaders to join them, CIFAR is able to expand the boundaries of understanding in ways that would otherwise not be possible.

CIFAR offers its research fellows the rarest of commodities: freedom to take the kinds of intellectual risks that are essential for creating truly transformative knowledge. And then CIFAR helps to share that knowledge – on everything from improving human health to advancing technology, from building strong societies to sustaining the Earth – with engaged stakeholders who are ready to put ideas into action.
CIFAR is seeking a Director, Innovation to join the team.

Reporting to the Vice-President of Knowledge Outreach, the Director of Innovation is responsible for pro-actively contributing to the knowledge mobilization (KM) strategy for the Institute with direct responsibility for the Institute’s annual KM plans for the business and R&D sectors. The Director provides independent leadership to the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive KM strategy for these sectors, representing CIFAR on a wide-range of KM engagements and building direct relationships with external stakeholders. The Director is also responsible for the publication strategies, driving CIFAR’s global reach and impact.

As the ideal candidate, you have in-depth knowledge of research and current activities, policies, and models in the field of knowledge mobilization. You have an in-depth understanding of how research, policy, and business environments intersect and are known for your motivational leadership and strategic planning skills. You are familiar with evidence synthesis and analysis, are a strong communicator, and work collegially with stakeholder groups. Five years experience in innovation, business or an R&D intensive organization is sought. A PhD in physical or computer sciences or in engineering would be an asset.
