Knowledge Translation Professionals Survey – Please participate

Dear Colleague,

This decade marks an important time in the development of the Knowledge Translation profession. Many public sector organizations are developing positions in the KT field, while at the same time, there is an absence of formalized training, educational programs, competency standards, or remuneration benchmarks.

The Learning Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children, is working to develop a Professional KT Certification Program that will be certified/accredited by the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) at the University of Toronto. The survey linked to this email (see bottom of page) marks one of the first steps to achieving this goal.

This survey is for you if you are (i) an identified KT professional – someone who ‘practices’ knowledge translation as part of their designated job role, or you are (ii) a key opinion leader who can fan this survey link out to their network, list serve, web newsletter, or within their organization. The survey is not intended to be completed by scientists in KT. The survey addresses the KT activities associated with the KT position, the characteristics of employment as a KT professional, the desired competencies of KT professionals, and lastly, KT training needs. The survey is anonymous and confidential.

The survey data will be used to render a picture of the state of the KT profession across Canada. This knowledge will help us to develop a competency framework and professional certification program at the Hospital for Sick Children and University of Toronto.

As there is no listing or professional association of KT professionals working in Canada, the survey is being sent to individuals working in KT jobs within organizations across Canada as we are able to identify them – through word of mouth and internet searching. Please circulate this email and survey link to others in your network who you believe may fit the criteria for participation.

An open access report of aggregate survey findings will be posted at on June 1 2010.

Piloting of the survey suggests it should take you 15 minutes or less to complete. There are a total of 39 questions. The survey has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at The Hospital for Sick Children.
