“Beyond Citations: Knowledge Mobilization, Research Impact, and the Changing Nature of Academic Work” is the title of a research article written by Matthew McKean, Conference Board of Canada. The article reviews the ResearchImpact-RéseauImpactRecherche network and the emerging importance of knowledge mobilization in Canada’s academic research enterprise and Canada’s inclusive innovation agenda.
This KTECOP webinar will feature presentations by David Phipps (ResearchImpact-RéseauImpactRecherche) and Matthew McKean (Conference Board of Canada) and then a conversation between them to dig into each of the four conclusions from Matthew’s research article.
Matthew’s article summarizes:
- Universities need to invest in institutional supports, such as dedicated knowledge brokers, for knowledge mobilization, as they currently do for technology transfer and industry liaison.
- University-based researchers would benefit from faculty evaluation criteria that incentivizes high-impact, interdisciplinary social, economic, environmental, cultural, and health research.
- The Pan-Canadian ResearchImpact network supports and facilitates knowledge mobilization and collaboration among faculty and student researchers, as well as community, industry, and government partners.
- A network approach reduces the barriers between disciplines and enhances collaboration supporting research impacts in communities across Canada.
They will also reflect on the proceedings at a reception the Conference Board of Canada is holding for the ResearchImpact network to close their 4th Annual Skills and Post-Secondary Education Summit, November 30-December 1, 2016.
The KTECOP webinar will be held using web-based Adobe Connect. Registrants will receive webinar instructions one day in advance.

About David Phipps
Dr. Phipps manages all research grants and agreements including knowledge and technology transfer for York University including York’s award winning Knowledge Mobilization Unit. In addition to other awards and recognition he has been named the most influential knowledge mobilizer in Canada. He received the 2015 Research Management Excellence Award and 2015 President’s Award for Innovation in Knowledge Mobilization. In 2015 he was named the Gordon and Jean Southam Fellow from the Association of Commonwealth Universities. He is also the KT Lead for NeuroDevNet and Network Director for ResearchImpact-RéseauImpactRecherche.
About Matthew McKean
Dr. McKean is a Senior Research Associate in the Conference Board of Canada’s Centre for Skills and Post-Secondary Education. He also manages the Quality Network for Universities. Prior to joining the Conference Board, he was a policy analyst at the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, where he wrote the Federation’s first working paper on research impact in those disciplines. He holds a PhD in History from Queen’s University, Kingston, and is an Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of History at Carleton University. Dr. McKean’s writing has appeared in The Globe & Mail, National Post, The Toronto Star, The Ottawa Citizen, The Hill Times, rabble.ca, Popmatters, Exclaim!, and This Magazine.
