Position Summary

Centennial College is an award-winning leader among Canadian colleges for applied research, innovation and entrepreneurship. The Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ARIES) group is seeking to expand research engagement across all Schools at the College and build innovation capacity and external recognition of Centennial’s innovation activity.   This role will spearhead strategic new research activities at the College, and grow these activities to become core innovation activities at the College, upon which further program expansion will occur.

Reporting to the Dean, ARIES (Applied Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Services), the Chair of Research and Innovation Engagement brings strong academia and research credentials to strategically lead, develop and manage multiple programs and initiatives to support the overall vision and strategy of the college.

 

Responsibilities

  • Works with Deans and Chairs of the Academic Schools to develop a strategic roadmap of research engagement, and then develops tactical initiatives with faculty and school leadership to help achieve the desired outcomes.
    1. Work with School of Community Health (SCHS) to build upon simulation expertise in healthcare environments, and other priority initiatives for the department.
    2. Work with School of Communication, Media Arts and Design (SCMAD) to develop new targeted activities in research that supports the arts and communications activity.
    3. Work with the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts to prioritize new areas of research engagement in the hospitality sector.
    4. Build capacity to support external grant submission activities in each of the above areas with the support of engaged faculty researchers.
  • Chairs the Centennial College Applied Research and Innovation Fellowship (ARIF) Application Evaluation Committees
    1. Assesses fellowship grant applications, initiates employment contracts, monitors salary and budget allocations, approves and processes procurements and recommends suggestion for process improvements
    2. Monitor and control activities – monitors project performance including risk and variance analysis, cost control and progress review in conjunction with the Operations, Finance, and Risk Manager
    3. Reduce and mitigate risk for the college while providing input into legal issues and be accountable for program funding
  • Presents in expert panels, workshop seminars, tradeshows and conferences nationally to enhance the College’s reputation
  • Builds strategic alliances with internal and external stakeholders, especially college personnel, industry partners and government funding organizations.
  • Acts as a consultant to the college management on research affiliated matters and provide coaching and counselling to fellowship and other program applicants and participants
  • Responsible for program management: initiate, plan, monitor, control and execute successfully on major research programs.   Facilitate student research internships as appropriate
  • Provide support as needed on external grant writing activity based on department needs.
  • Provide support to the Research Ethics Board and assistance to organize the annual “Centennial Innovates” (Research, Innovation, Scholarship, and Entrepreneurship) event.

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • Seven (7) years’ progressive experience planning, designing and executing research projects in public and private sectors including direct academic experience
  • Master’s degree or equivalent with a specialization in sciences, engineering, and/or arts preferable, with additional certifications in business consulting, research ethics, technology transfer or project/program management.  PhD is highly desired.
  • High degree of initiative, independence of action and sound decision-making skills
  • Strong presentation and written communication skills with funding proposal and critiquing capability
  • Proven relationship development of strategic alliances with internal and external stakeholders
  • Well networked with industry associations and trade groups.  Prior experience with research activity in a post-secondary environment is highly desired.
  • Proven supervisory experience in overseeing and coaching of employees; hiring experience an asset
  • Experience in program development, management and consulting is an asset
  • Proven financial acumen and the managing of budgets and risk associated
  • Familiar with Canadian jurisprudence, including relevant legislations and college policies, practices, guidelines, procedures and contract obligations
  • Strong understanding and commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles and collaboration
  • Knowledgeable of all regulatory requirements relating to research and innovation in their portfolio including research ethics, environmental impact assessments, health and safety, use of animals, academic integrity, and regulatory approvals for products and services
